Beta Technologies and Vertical Aerospace are both racing toward certified electric aircraft, but they are taking opposite bets: Beta is certifying a fixed-wing aircraft first, while Vertical is certifying only its redesigned VTOL, Valo, under Europe's toughest eVTOL safety category.
# Two Certification Bets, One Race
Beta Technologies and Vertical Aerospace are both building battery-electric aircraft aimed at commercial service later this decade, but their certification strategies diverge sharply.
## Beta: eCTOL first, eVTOL second
Beta is certifying its CX300, a conventional-takeoff-and-landing fixed-wing aircraft, under FAA Part 23, the well-established rulebook for small airplanes. CEO Kyle Clark has said the fixed-wing variant offers a clearer path to certification than the company's vertical-lift Alia-250, which is pursuing certification as a powered-lift aircraft under 14 CFR Part 21.17(b), the FAA's newer category for eVTOLs. Beta originally targeted CX300 certification and first deliveries around 2025, but as of mid-2026 the company is targeting commercial operations for the CX300 in late 2027, with the Alia-250 targeted for 2028.
## Vertical: one aircraft, the strictest category
Vertical Aerospace is taking the opposite approach: a single aircraft, Valo, the redesigned successor to its VX4 prototype, certifying directly against the UK Civil Aviation Authority's and EASA's SC-VTOL Enhanced category. Vertical plans to build seven certification aircraft in the UK and pursue concurrent UK CAA/EASA certification, targeting 2028. There is no fixed-wing fallback in the plan.
## Why the difference matters
Fixed-wing-first sequencing trades some of the flying-taxi narrative for a faster, lower-risk revenue path; single-aircraft, top-category certification is a higher-risk, higher-reward bet that, if it clears on schedule, arrives already qualified for the most demanding commercial passenger operations in its market.
