Plain-English Explainer
Part 22 defines design and production requirements for non-type-certificated aircraft. Eligible light-sport aircraft demonstrate compliance through the applicable FAA-accepted framework. This differs from a special-class Type Certificate under Part 21.
The requirements cover aircraft characteristics and systems, including minimum safe speed, propulsion reliability, fire protection, quality assurance and ground/flight testing.
FAA's current accepted-MOC table states that an accepted standard enabling simplified-flight-control designation is not yet available. A manufacturer's simplified-control marketing does not resolve that limitation. Pilot privileges and operational permissions are separate.
