ASTM F3653-24 defines methods for validating rechargeable lithium-battery equipment, location and installation on aircraft.
Battery safety depends on more than cell chemistry. Installation location, aircraft integration and the characteristics of rechargeable lithium technology must be addressed as part of the certification case.
The standard was developed with Level 1 through Level 4 normal-category airplanes in focus. ASTM says the material may be applied more broadly, but that wider use depends on approval by the relevant civil aviation authority.
