FAA AC 20-184 provides guidance for testing, installation, operation and maintenance of installed rechargeable lithium batteries and battery systems on aircraft.
Battery-system safety is not only a cell-level problem. Installation, containment, monitoring, thermal behavior, continued airworthiness and the way the battery integrates with the aircraft all affect certification evidence.
The FAA document states that its acceptable-means-of-compliance guidance uses RTCA DO-347 and DO-311. The AC itself is guidance and is not mandatory.
