EH216-S is EHang’s two-seat pilotless multicopter eVTOL. Unlike winged transition aircraft, it uses distributed vertical-lift propulsion throughout the flight profile and is designed for automated operation without an onboard pilot.
The aircraft has moved beyond type certification in China: CAAC type, production and standard airworthiness approvals have been achieved, and approved operators received the first Air Operator Certificates for human-carrying pilotless eVTOL services in March 2025.

CAAC issued the EH216-S Type Certificate in October 2023. Standard airworthiness certificates followed for individual aircraft, and the Production Certificate was issued in 2024. In March 2025, EHang General Aviation and Hefei HeYi Aviation received the first Air Operator Certificates for civil human-carrying pilotless aerial vehicles.
These approvals are specific to the Chinese regulatory framework and should not be treated as equivalent approval in other jurisdictions.
In March 2025 CAAC issued the first Air Operator Certificates for civil human-carrying pilotless aerial vehicles to two EH216-S operators. EHang states that the certificates authorize paid human-carrying services at designated operating sites, including low-altitude tourism and urban sightseeing in Guangzhou and Hefei.
This supports a site-specific commercial-operations classification. It should not be generalized into unrestricted nationwide scheduled passenger service, and approvals in other jurisdictions remain separate.
Within China, the principal task has shifted from aircraft certification to converting trial operations into public passenger service. EHang reported in August 2026 that approvals had slowed after a June accident involving a piloted light-sport aircraft, and withdrew its 2026 revenue guidance. International deployment remains dependent on each market's airworthiness, operational and airspace framework.
